Why is it important for women to support each other?!
Our Passionista Meetup
There have been many times where I've noticed women bash each other and not be supportive of other women's ambitions. It's quite sad and frustrating to be honest. The thing I've noticed is that with women we are not automatically supporting each other. We can be in a same vicinity, but not embrace each other. There's no "oh hey girl, we are both trying to reach this goal, I want to win, you want to win.. let's see how we can help each other" and that's really discouraging. We live in a society where we compare and compete with other women instead of supporting and congratulating them. While in school we are taught by fellow people that "she's prettier, she has better clothing, she's smarter than me" but in reality it's okay to be different. Of course it's in our nature to want to look and do better but we need to start offering our hand out and doing better.
This past weekend I hosted along side of my new sister friend Desiry ( @desiredcitygirl ) a Passionista meetup that consisted of people who are chasing after this passion. I actually met Desiry through social media and introduced her to the idea of having a creative meet up for people to discuss our goals and passion. The reason why I wanted to have this meetup is because I was influenced by blogger and media influencer Mattie James ( mattieologie ) . She hosted a blogger meetup here in Atlanta and attending was one of the best decisions ever for me. I met a lot of women like myself who are bloggers and chasing after our goals full force . That meet up gave me the confidence to reach out to someone I didn't know and try to do the same . I was super excited Desiry was interested in the idea and we put something special together in a matter of a few weeks. We found a restaurant that let us host our meetup, hired a photographer, passed out gift bags, and hosted a round table discussion with questions targeting our passions. Some of the questions consisted of ...
What is your passion & why? At what age did you acknowledge your passion?
What kind of frustrations do you encounter on a daily bases?
What is your greatest passionista moment?
We had everyone answer one question and had others join in on the discussion. The conversation was amazing! You would have had to be there to really experience how amazing it was.
Everyone walked away feeling inspired, motivated and wanting to accomplish more. We even convinced one of the ladies to start putting out her artwork out there and make a social media page for it as well, and guess what? I came across her new ig page yesterday with all of her sketches! ( check her out - ( @artafro ) She thanked me for giving her the push to get started and that really touched me. You never know how much it means to someone to give that initial push to get started.
Over all the meet up was a success and I strongly suggest you hosting one as well. Men, women, etc . WE NEED THESE! We need to be reminded that we are not in competition with each other , we need to be motivating each other to do better, we need that support ! It's important to our generation and very necessary.
So I challenge you, before the end of the year is over to introduce yourself to someone you don't know and see how you all can connect professionally. Collaborate and share ideas, be a mentor to someone, and have a conversation! Put your phones down and communicate!!! We all know that staying focused is hard and being inspired can be impossible as times but you never know who you might touch or inspire and have a positive influence on their lives.
